Mount McKinley, the native Athabaskan people know it as Denali, is the highest mountain in North America, with 6,194 m (20,320 ft). The mountain is located in the Alaska Mountain Range, within the Denali National Park, Alaska. Denali can be reached by Highway 3.

The Ohio River forms the natural border with Illinois, Indiana, Ohio to the north and West Virginia to the east, the Mississippi river forms the border to Missouri to the west. Kentucky's five major regions are the Cumberland Plateau in south east, the Bluegrass region the northeastern part of the state, the Pennyroyal Plateau (Pennyrile, also known as Mississippi Plateau), the Western Coal Fields and the Jackson Purchase in west, that part of Kentucky near Missouri, that was purchased from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818. Originally part of Virginia, Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union in 1792.

State of Minnesota FlagMinnesota is located in northern central US mainland, a part of the Great Lakes Region. The midwestern state is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba and has a coastline at Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes.
Minnesota joined the Union on 11th May 1858, as the 32nd state.

The state occupies an area of 225,181 km² (86,939 sq mi), compared it is somewhat smaller than Romania (238,391 km²) or just slightly larger than the US state of Utah. Minnesota is also known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", it counts even more than 11,000 lakes, including small Lake Itasca, known for being the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

North Carolina covers an area of 139,390 km² (53,819 sq mi), compared it is about twice the size of Ireland. The landscape features three major variations, vast marshlands in the coastal tidewater area in east, the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains in west, and the Piedmont plateau region in the middle.

State of South Dakota FlagThe sparsely populated landlocked midwestern state is situated in the north-central United States and named after the Dakota branch of the Sioux tribes, the Native American people who once dominated the entire Dakota Territory. On 2 November 1889 South Dakota and North Dakota were admitted to the Union.
South Dakota covers an area of 199,730 km² compared it is about two-thirds the size of Italy. South Dakota's eastern landscape offers sprawling prairies, glacial lakes, and fertile farmland. Much of western South Dakota is covered by grassland and features funny hills, known as buttes. The Black Hills in southwest are the location of Black Elk Peak (2,200 m or 7220 ft), the highest point in South Dakota. The Missouri River divides the state roughly from north to south, it is South Dakota's largest river.

State of Utah FlagUtah ia a landlocked state in the western US. Utah covers an area of 219,882 km² of (84,897 sq mi), compared it is somewhat smaller than the island of Great Britain (229,848 km²).

In large parts Utah is sparsely inhabited because around 80% of its population of 3 million people (2015 est.) live in the north central part of the state, at the Wasatch Front; a chain of cities and towns running roughly north to south along the Wasatch Mountain Range.

The Green Mountain State has a population of 626,000 people known as Vermonter. It is the second least populated US state.
Vermont's mountainous landscape offers gorges, ravines, pastures, and woodlands. Favored destinations are the huge Green Mountain National Forest, with waterfalls, cliffs, ponds and trails for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation. Lake Champlain, the large freshwater lake in north west, Mount Mansfield, the highest place in Vermont. Stowe Mountain Ski Resort, and Smugglers Notch State Park.

Virginia, VA

The Old Dominion State

State of Virginia FlagThe Commonwealth of Virginia, is situated in the eastern United States, bordering Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean in east. The state covers an area of 110,787 km² (42,775 sq mi), this is about the size of Bulgaria.
Virginia entered the Union on 25 June 1788, it is one of the original thirteen states. Virginia is best known Pocahontas, the daughter of Chief Powhatan, and for Jamestown, the site of the first English settlement in the US, and therefore Virginia became 'the birthplace of a nation'. Popular destinations are the beaches on the East Coast, Shenandoah National Park, which extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, a 2,180-mile hiking trail, and Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the US.

State of Washington FlagWashington is the northwestern-most state of the contiguous United States. It is bordered by the Canadian province of British Columbia in north and the Pacific Ocean in west. Washington covers an area of 71,362 square miles (184,827 km²), this is about three-quarter the size of the UK. The state's population passed 7 million in 2015.
Famous landmarks are the snow-covered mountains and lush rain forests in the Olympic National Park with its dramatic Pacific coastline, the Cascades, a major mountain range and within Mount Rainier, considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

West Virginia, WV

The Mountain State

State of West Virginia FlagThe landlocked state is situated in the Appalachian mountain region in the central eastern United States. The Ohio River determines sections of the boundaries with Ohio and Kentucky in west. West Virginia covers an area of 62,755 km² (24,230 sq mi), making it a bit smaller than Latvia (64,589 km²) or somewhat smaller than half the size of Nicaragua (130,370 km²). The State of West Virginia is inhabited by more than1.8 million people, mostly West Virginians.

Historically the state has been separated from Virginia during the American Civil War (1861) and became the 35th state of the US in 1863. Famous sights are the River Gorge Bridge over the River Gorge, and the West Virginia State Penitentiary, the Gothic style prison in operation for more than a century.
