About San DiegoSatellite view showing San Diego, a seaport in southern California United States. The city is located along the Pacific Ocean at San Diego Bay just north of the US-Mexican border. A section of the San Diego Freeway connects San Diego with the Mexican city of Tijuana, which is part of the international San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area.
The region of San Diego Bay was colonized by Spain in the late 18th century. In 1821 San Diego became part of the Mexican state of Alta California. In 1848 the city was ceded by Mexico to the United States.
Today San Diego has a population of about 1.4 million inhabitants (2013 est.)
