The city is located at the confluence of three rivers: the Menomonee, the Kinnickinnic, and the Milwaukee river, on the shore of Lake Michigan, about 90 mi (150 km) north of Chicago in the southeastern corner of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee has a population of about 600,000 inhabitants (in 2014), in its metropolitan area live more than 1.5 million people.

Milwaukee is home to the Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The city also features the Discovery World Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Milwaukee earned the nickname, the "City of Festivals", most famous the Summerfest (The Big Gig) a yearly music festival and one of the largest music festivals in the world.
