The city is the seat of all three branches of the Brazilian government. Brasília was planned and designed  in 1956 by Lúcio Costa as the principal urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect. The city was built in the center of the country with the intention of drawing people away from the crowded coastal areas.

Since 1987 the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is "a landmark in the history of town planning". On this page now you can walk through the city by using the "street view" option.

Brasília has a population of about 2 to 2.4 million inhabitants. Official language is Portuguese.

FIFA World Cup
The city was one of the twelve host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Seven matches were held at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha stadium.
