The city was founded in 1855 to become the new administrative center of Sergipe. It was the Brazil's second planned city (after Teresina) with a geometrical lay out of streets. The capital of Sergipe state was then transferred from São Cristovao to Aracaju. Today the city has a population of 614,000 people (census 2013) about 900,000 people live in the metropolitan area (Grande Aracaju).

Aracaju is quite famous for its beaches and as the city with the most healthful living habits, thus it got its nickname: "Northeastern Capital of Quality of Life". It is home to Museu da Gente Sergipana (Museum of the People of Sergipe) and the Federal University of Sergipe.
Aracaju's economy is mainly based on a variety of services and some industries.

Aracaju lies in a hot and humid climate zone with a wet season from April to July, and it is dry from October to January. The average temperature is around 26° C.

The Map shows a city map of Aracaju with expressways, main roads and streets and the location of Aracaju Airport known as Santa Maria Airport (IATA Code: AJU) which is by road about 8 km (5 mi) south of Aracaju's city center.
