About FlorenceSome of the world's most important works of art can be seen in this Tuscan city. Florence has an unparalleled artistic heritage and was an important scientific center for centuries.Florence is the capital city of Toscana (Tuscany) region and Firenze province. The city is located in central Italy on the Arno River, about 80 km east of the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Founded as a colony by Julius Caesar in 59 BC near the site of an Etruscan settlement in the fertile plain of the Arno river. Florence started to flourish in the Middle Ages to become the most influential city in the known world. It was the center of the Renaissance movement, facilitated by the wealth and influence of the House of Medici and shaped by artists, thinkers, architects and engineers of that time: Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Brunelleschi, Cimabue, Giotto, Galileo Galilei, Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. Today the city has a population of about 377,000 inhabitants (in 2013), 1 million people live in the metropolitan area (Area metropolitana di Firenze). Spoken language is Florentine, a Tuscan dialect and the parent language of modern Italian. The Historic Centre of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Cathedral Piazza of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi Gallery, one of the oldest and most famous art museums of the Western world, the Palazzo Pitti, the largest museum complex in Florence.
