About Portugal

Portugal has a population of 10.4 million people (2014); national capital and largest city is Lisbon with about 550,000 residents, 2,8 million people live in Lisbon's Greater Metropolitan Area. Spoken language is Portuguese.

Portugal climate is maritime temperate (cool, rainy) in the northwest, its Mediterranean climate in the south is making the country a popular tourist destination.

Portugal's main attractions for travelers are its hilly capital Lisbon; the famous Algarve coast; Sintra and the Palácio da Pena official website, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Portugal's second-largest city Porto (Oporto), Coimbra, Portugal's former capital with its preserved medieval old town, Évora, the capital of south-central Alentejo region with its historic center and its 1st century Roman Temple of Diana, Ponta da Piedade near the port city of Lagos in the Algarve; Madeira island and its capital Funchal; Ponta Delgada in the Azores archipelago. Serra da Estrela (transl.: Star Mountains) is a mountain range and a nature park, it is the largest protected area in Portugal; within looms mount Torre (means Tower), with 1,993 m or 6,539 ft the highest peak in Continental Portugal. Mount Pico an ultra prominent stratovolcano with an elevation of 2,351 m (7,713 ft), located on Pico Island in the the Azores is the highest mountain of Portugal.
