Florence is the capital city of Toscana (Tuscany) region and Firenze province. The city is located in central Italy on the Arno River, about 80 km east of the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Founded as a colony by Julius Caesar in 59 BC near the site of an Etruscan settlement in the fertile plain of the Arno river. Florence started to flourish in the Middle Ages to become the most influential city in the known world.
