About KampalaImage: Laika In its early days, the city was the capital of the Buganda kingdom. Uganda became a British 'Protectorate' from 1894 until 1962. In 1893 the Imperial British East Africa Company transferred its administration rights of territory consisting mainly of the Buganda Kingdom to the British Government. Today Kampala is one of the fastest growing city on the planet, with a population of more than1.5 million (in 2014). Spoken languages are English, Luganda and Swahili. In 2016 Kampala has been ranked by Mercer as the best city to live in East Africa. Kampala is one of Africa's "greenest" cities, with parks, gardens and golf courses. The city is the economical, political and cultural center of the country, it is home to Makerere University, the Uganda Museum, and the Ugandan National Theatre. Other points of interest are Kabaka's Palace (history of Buganda), Nakasero Market, and St. Balikuddembe Market (formerly known as Owino Market), the Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs (a minor basilica), Wonder World Amusement Park, and Casino Simba (gambling).
