The city is located on a broad plain between the Florida Everglades to the west and Biscayne Bay (a lagoon on the Atlantic coast) in south. The Port of Miami is the world's largest cruise ship port. Miami is home to many entertainment venues, theaters, museums, and performing arts centers, like Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts home of the Florida Grand Opera, the Knight Concert Hall, the Ziff Ballet Opera House, and the Carnival Studio Theater. Miami is best known for its tropical weather, its beaches, the Miami nightlife and it is one of the hottest spots in the gay and lesbian universe. The city is famous for the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, one of the nation's premier outdoor fine arts festivals. The city of Miami Beach, located east of Miami on a barrier island between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is #5 in National Geographic's Top 10 List of Beach Cities. Miami has a population of about 430,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city within the South Florida metropolitan area, which is the largest metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States with 5.5 million people.
