About Norfolk

The city is located opposite the city of Portsmouth, Virginia, north of Elizabeth River in the Hampton Roads region, south of Chesapeake Bay at the Atlantic Ocean.

Norfolk is considered to be the historic, cultural, and financial center of the region. The city has a population of about 246,000 inhabitants, 1.5 million people live in Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Norfolk is Virginia's second-largest city behind neighboring Virginia Beach.

What distinguishes Norfolk from other American cities? Norfolk is home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest Navy base in the world, and also home to one of NATO's two Strategic Command headquarters.

Town Point Park, Norfolk's premier waterfront entertainment venue on the Elizabeth River. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum and Nauticus National Maritime Center, a maritime-themed science center and museum, now home to the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy.

The Chrysler Museum of Art has a fine art collection from Old Masters to contemporary.

The Wells Theatre, a performing arts venue and home to the Virginia Stage Company.
