Tianjin is one of the four municipalities that have provincial-level status, the highest level classificiation for cities with a status equal to that of a province. The municipality incorporates the coastal region of Tanggu which is the port for Tianjin and the state-level new area of Binhai. The urban agglomeration of Tianjin/Binhai and nearby rural aeas which constitutes the Tianjin district has a population of 10.4 million inhabitants (2011), almost 4 million live in the rural areas.
