About Chile

Map is showing Chile, a country that occupies a long strip of land that runs down the western coast of South America, extending more than 4200 km (2,650 mi) southward from the Great North (Norte Grande) with the Atacama Desert at its border with Peru in north, to Cape Horn, the southern end of the continent. The Andes mountains to the east form a natural border with Bolivia and Argentina. The country is located along a highly seismic and volcanic zone, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the ring of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean. Chile has more than three-dozen active volcanoes, one of them Nevado Ojos del Salado, a massive stratovolcano in the Andes on the Argentine–Chilean border is the highest active volcano in the world at 6,893 m (22,615 ft.). It is the highest mountain in Chile.

Chile's area is slightly smaller than that of Turkey or slightly smaller than twice the size of the U.S. state of Montana.

Chile has a population of 17.8 million people (in 2014). Capital and largest city is Santiago (Santiago de Chile), other major cities are Valparaiso, Concepcion, La Serena, Antofagasta, and Temuco. National language is Spanish.
