Bangladesh is divided into eight administrative divisions, eached named after its capital.
The
eight divisions are:
Dhaka division
Dhaka forms the core of the country: political, economic, and demographic center; dense floodplains of the central Ganges delta.
Chittagong Division
Hilly Chittagong, officially Chattogram Division, is subdivided into eleven districts (zilas). The division's capital is Bangladesh main port and its gateway to the world's ocean. Also part of the division is the over 150 km long
Cox's Bazar beach, one of the longest natural uninterrupted ocean beaches in the world. The Chittagong Hill Tracts are the only hilly region in this otherwise flat country.
Rajshahi Division
Rajshahi division is located in the northwestern part of the country. Capital and largest city is Rajshahi, also known as the
Silk City. Rajshahi division is the central hub for mulberry farming and silkworm rearing, a prerequisite for the silk production.
Khulna Division
The the second-largest of Bangladesh's eight administrative divisions is located within the lower Ganges–Brahmaputra delta. Khulna includes extensive coastal and estuarine landscapes and is home to the
Sundarbans mangrove forest; tidal rivers, fisheries, and shrimp aquaculture.
Barisal Division
The Barisal Division is a water world, in the south-central part of the country, often called the "Venice of Bengal" a dense network of rivers and canals; a delta landscape with boat-based life.
Sylhet Division
The northeastern division offers rolling tea estates and seasonal flood basins (haors); strong cultural identity. It shares international borders with the Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura to the north, east and south respectively.
Rangpur Division
Rangpur Division was formed in January 2010, it is the northernmost administrative division of Bangladesh. The division is mainly farmland and features fertile plains, cooler winters and an agriculture-driven economy.
Mymensingh Division
Mymensingh Division was established in 2015 from the northern part of the Dhaka Division. It is located in the north-central floodplains with the low Garo Hills near its border with India to the north.
