About Baghdad

The city is located on both sides of the Tigris River, in a vast fertile plain in central east of the country, known as Mesopotamia, a region considered to be one of the cradles of civilization. Baghdad is situated about 85 km (53 mi) north of the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon.

The city was founded in the 8th century, named Madinat al-Salam (City of Peace). The round city of Baghdad, which was to become the core of today Baghdad, was built between 764 and 768, on the order of the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur.

Today Baghdad has a population of about 7.2 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan area, making it the second largest city in the Arab world.
