![]() A 69m wide burning crater in the Derweze area in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan is known as the 'Gate to Hell'. Soviet geologists in search of oil discovered the site in 1971, drilling work begun soon after and then the site collapsed, in fear of poisonous gas emissions they set it alight, since then the country has a new tourist attraction. The former Soviet state became independent in 1991. Sparsely populated Turkmenistan has a population of just 5.4 million inhabitants (in 2015). Capital and largest city is Ashgabat (Ashkhabad). Spoken languages are Turkmen, Russian is still widely spoken. |
