About AshgabatImage: Michael Karavanov The city is located in central south of the country, between the Karakum desert and the Kopet Dag mountain range, in Ahal Welayaty province, about 35 km north of the border to Iran. The city was founded in 1881 and nearly destroyed in 1948 by an 7.3 earthquake. Turkmenistan became 'independent' upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, only to be ruled by the totalitarian and repressive President NIYAZOV from 1985 until his death in 2006. During his regime he used the high oil revenue of the country to build a new capital within the old one, with Soviet style marble clad palaces, broad avenues, parks and landmarks, and a bird-shaped airport in Ashgabat Ashgabat has a population of about 700,000 inhabitants.
