State capital is Mainz (Mayence), other major cities are Frankenthal, Idar-Oberstein, Kaiserslautern, Koblenz (Coblenz), Landau in der Pfalz, the industrial city Ludwigshafen am Rhein (BASF), Neustadt (Weinstraße), Pirmasens, Zweibrücken, and the old cities of Speyer (Spires), Trier, and Worms.
Rhineland-Palatinate has a population of about 4 million inhabitants.
