___ Famous Landmarks: Sacred Mountains - Satellite View of Kilimanjaro (Kilima Njaro), Tanzania

Satellite view of Mount Kilimanjaro using Google Earth Data

Map showing Mount Kilimanjaro, a snow-capped mountain at the Equator, surrounded by savanna where wild animals roam freely, this is a mighty symbol for the pristine Africa.
Africa's largest volcano has three cones, Kibo - the main summit, Mawenzi, and Shira. The tallest free-standing mountain in the world is located in northeastern Tanzania close to the border of Kenya. The mountain's highest elevation of 5,895 meters (19,340 ft) is Uhuru Peak on Kibo. The volcano erupted from the Sanya plains between 750,000 and 1 million years ago. The origin of the mountain's name is hidden in the mist of history, there are many attempts to explain the name from various dialects of Tanzanian and Maasai people, but none can be confirmed as the original source.

Unlike many other mountains in the world Kilimanjaro seems not to be the seat of deities, nor the object of veneration by the local tribes like the Chagga who reside at the foot of the mountain. Rather the "Shining Mountain" is seen as a prohibited zone, a place of danger and death, the dwelling of evil spirits and demons and watched over by a guardian spirit who would destroy anybody who presumed to climb beyond a certain limit.
