About DarwinSatellite view is showing Darwin, most populous city and capital of Australia's Northern Territory (NT). The northernmost of Australia's capital cities is located on the north coast of the continent at the Timor Sea in a region called "Top End". The city has a population of about 130,000 inhabitants. In the sparsely populated Northern Territory the city of Darwin is the administrative, commercial, industrial, and cultural center of the state. The former pioneer outpost with a small port is today one of Australia's most modern and most multicultural cities. Located in the city are the Parliament House, the seat of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, the Government House, which is the residence of the Administrator of the Northern Territory, and the Northern Territory Supreme Court. Other attractions are the large Bicentennial Park at Darwin's waterfront, Darwin Convention Centre, and the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. The tropical city is an attraction for many tourists, therefore tourism is one of Darwin's largest industries. The city is the starting point for sightseeing tours of Australia's Top End to nearby Charles Darwin National Park and other Outback attractions like Kakadu and Litchfield National Park, Arnhem Land, the Tiwi Islands and Katherine region with Nitmiluk National Park. Darwin was in Lonely Planet’s list of Best in Travel: Top 10 cities for 2012. The city is described as: "It was once easy to dismiss Darwin as a frontier town full of brawling fishermen, dreamy hippies and redneck truckers. But with a pumping nocturnal scene, magical markets and restaurants, and world-class wilderness areas just down the road, today Darwin is the triumph of Australia’s Top End. Beat the crowds to the redeveloping Waterfront Precinct with its wave pool, bars and wharf eateries; or score some brilliant Indigenous art before East Coast galleries snap it up and charge double. Nose your way through the food stalls at Mindil Beach Sunset Market, then watch the sun melt into the Timor Sea. When southern Australia is chilling through winter, here it’s blue skies, party nights and sleeping late." The Map shows a city map of Darwin located at the tip of a peninsula with expressways, main roads and streets; and the location of Darwin Airport (IATA Code: DRW) in a suburb of Darwin in the north eastern part of the city, 13 kilometers (8 mi) from the city center.
