About Alice Springs

alice springs logoSatellite view is showing Alice Springs, popularly known as “The Alice” or simply “Alice”, the second most populous town in the Northern Territory, one of the six states of Australia. "Alice" is located almost in the center of the country at the normally dry Todd River on the northern side of the MacDonnell Ranges in the Central Australian desert, which is also known as the "Red Center". With a population of just about 28,000 residents Alice Springs is more a small town than a city.

The Aboriginal name for Alice Springs is Mparntwe, the Arrernte Aboriginal people are the original custodians of Arrernte lands around Mparntwe or Alice Springs, they have lived in the region for thousands of years.
Arrernte people maintain a strong presence in Alice Springs and are playing a major role in the Aboriginal organisations in the town.

Modern Alice Springs has both Aboriginal and international influences, it is an important tourist hub and the commercial and cultural center for the surrounding area in the sparsely populated Northern Territory.
The town is known as the Aboriginal Art capital of Central Australia, the Araluen Arts Center in Alice Springs is the center of the performing and visual arts scene, incorporating galleries and a theater. The Art Center is the organizer of the yearly held "Desert Mob" a selling exhibition showcasing current trends from Aboriginal art centres in Central Australia.

Alice Springs is connected to the rest of Australia by The Ghan on the Adelaide–Darwin railway, a north–south transcontinental railway which operates between Adelaide (1,330 km) and Darwin (1,291 km). Alice Springs Airport offers daily flights to Adelaide, Ayers Rock (Uluru), Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
