About New Caledonia

New Caledonia is an archipelago in a part of the South Pacific Ocean known as the Coral Sea. The island group consists of the Loyalty Islands, the uninhabited Chesterfield Islands and the Belep archipelago (not depicted on the map), the Isle of Pines and the main island Grande Terre, which is situated about 1400 km (755 nautical miles) east of Australia's coast. New Caledonia shares maritime borders with: Australia, the Fiji Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. The archipelago had become a French colony in 1853, it was a French overseas territory from 1946 to 1999 and is now a French special collectivity with a gradual transfer of power from France to New Caledonia. With an area of 18,575 km² it is about twice the size of Cyprus (9,251 km²), or about twice the size of the US State of New Hampshire (9,350 km²) New Caledonia has a population of 256,000 people (2012). The population is a mix of Kanak people (original inhabitants of New Caledonia) 44%, Europeans (Caldoches and Metropolitan French) 31%, Polynesian people (from Wallis and Futuna) 9%, and South-East Asian people. Capital and largest city is Nouméa. Principal airport of New Caledonia is TontoutaAirport (IATA code: NOU). Spoken languages are French (official), and more than 30 Melanesian-Polynesian dialects.
