About Arecibo ObservatorySatellite view is showing the Arecibo Observatory located near the town of Arecibo in Puerto Rico. The very sensitive radio telescope is owned by the United States, and administered as a national facility by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC). The observatory's 305 m radio telescope is the largest single-aperture telescope ever constructed. It is the largest radio telescope in the world, the main reflector dish measures 330 meters (1000 feet) in diameter and covers an area of 18 acres, the size of ten football fields. The surface is made of almost 40,000 perforated aluminum panels, each measuring about 90 cm by 180 cm (3 ft by 6 ft), supported by a network of steel cables strung across the underlying karst sinkhole. It is a spherical (not parabolic) reflector. Suspended 137 m (450 ft) above the reflector is the 900 ton platform. Similar in design to a bridge, it hangs in midair on eighteen cables, which are strung from three reinforced concrete towers. Research areas are Radar Astronomy studies, Radio Astronomy studies, and Atmospheric Science. The SETI@home program is using the telescope as a primary source for its research. | |
