European Union
In the shadow of Athens ancient Acropolis leaders of 25 nations signed treaties of accession for 10 new member lands to join the European Union, it is the union's largest single expansion.
The ceremony will be completed in May 2004, when the countries formally become union members.

The new members include eight former Communist countries, the 10 EU applicants are: Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and also Malta and a divided Cyprus - 73 million people in all.

The Shuttle Breaks Apart - There Are No Survivors
Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrates in flames 200,000 feet over Texas on Saturday, killing six Americans and Col. Ilan Ramon, Israel's first astronaut just minutes before they were to glide to a landing in Florida.  

Now an independent board consisting of experts from the Air Force and Navy and officials from the Transportation Department and other federal agencies will investigate the shuttle accident.
