Derweze gas crater
A 69m wide burning crater in the Derweze area in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan is known as the 'Gate to Hell'. Soviet geologists in search of oil discovered the site in 1971, drilling work begun soon after and then the site collapsed, in fear of poisonous gas emissions they set it alight, since then the country has a new tourist attraction.
