| Liberia, the "Land of the Free" is a country on the North Atlantic Ocean coast of West Africa between Côte d’Ivoire and Sierra Leone. With an area of 111,369 sq km (43,000 sq mi ) Liberia is slightly smaller than Honduras, somewhat bigger than Bulgaria and slightly larger than Tennessee. Geography: The country consists of flat coastal plain that contains creeks, mangrove swamps, and lagoons. Beyond that, forested hills, from 180 to 370 m (600 to 1,200 ft) high cover the rest of the country, excluding the mountains in the northern highlands. The maximum peak in the Nimba Mountains is 1,383 m (4,540 ft). Six principal rivers flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Vegetation is predominantly forest, and the tropical, humid climate sees rainfall averages of 465 cm (183 in) on the coast and 224 cm (88 in) in the southeast. The dry season (with Harmattan trade wind, in December and January) splits two rainy seasons. Main cities other than Monrovia are the ports of Harper and Buchanan.
