The city is located in central nord of the country on the Highveld Plateau at the foot of the Magaliesberg mountain range. The city lies on a major highwayabout 160 km from Johannesburg and 100 km from Pretoria.Rustenburg has a population of about 400,000 inhabitants about 1 million live in the greater metropolitan area. Spoken languages are Tswana (Setswana ) 64.8%, Afrikaans 9.2%, Xhosa 7.6%, Sotho 6.8%, and Tsonga 3.4%. The city was the hometown of Paul Kruger, the State President (1883–1900) of the South African Republic (Transvaal). Rustenburg is one of the oldest towns in the North West province, it was founded in 1851 by Boers (white farmers). Around the area of the city are the two largest platinum mines in the world, the Pilanesberg National Park, a game reserve almost half the size of Belgium, and the Madikwe National Park with the 2nd largest concentration of elephants in the country.
