The administrative center of the Osh Province is located in the Fergana Valley in the south of the country, close to the border with Uzbekistan.It was, until the 15th century, an important post on an ancient trade route to China and India, the city was known as early as the 8th century as a center for silk production along the Silk Road. Osh has a population of about 220,000 inhabitants, comprising Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tajiks, and other smaller ethnic groups. Spoken languages are Kyrgyz, Uzbek, Russian and Persian. The Osh riots, an ethnic conflict between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks escalated in June 1990 in the city of Osh. According to the official (Soviet) figures, 5000 criminal acts were committed during the conflict, 300 people were killed, over a thousand wounded, and hundreds of houses were destroyed. On the 10 of June 2010, again riots erupted in Osh, Kyrgyz mobs of rioters slaughtered Uzbeks and burned their homes and businesses, tens of thousands of ethnic Uzbeks have been forced to flee the country.
