In Tibet since centuries the mountain is named Chomolungma: (means: mother goddess of the universe or "Saint Mother") In Nepal the mountain is named Sagarmatha (means: head/god/goddess of the sky) Mt. Everest is part of the Khumbu Himal mountain range along the border of Nepal and Tibet (China). The Himalayas are among the youngest mountain ranges on the planet, their formation began about 70 million years ago. It's the result of a colossal continental collision between two tectonic plates, the Indo-Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. |
