Mandalay is an important Buddhist religious site and the main education center in Upper and Central Myanmar. The city is home to several universities including the Mandalay University, the oldest university in northern Myanmar. The city is a major trading center, much of Burmese external trade to China goes through Mandalay. Official Language is Burmese, English is spoken by some Burmese, particulary in the tourism service sector.
