The city is located in the northwest of the country at the Bosporus (or Istanbul) strait, which connects the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea. Istanbul is ranked as an Alpha World City in 2008, according to GaWC. Formerly the Roman city of Constantinople 330–1453, it was built on the site of the ancient Greek city of Byzantium. It was the capital of Turkey from 1453 until 1923. It is the only city in the world that lies in two continents. Istanbul has a population of about 9 million inhabitants.
