Satellite View of Noble Sanctuary using Google Earth DataThe map showing the Old City of Jerusalem with the Temple Mount or Noble Sanctuary, situated on an ancient man-made platform located on the Judaean Hills in Jerusalem the largest city in Israel.In the beliefs of the Jews, the Muslims and the Christians the Temple Mount is really a historical sacred place in the old city of Jerusalem. In Judaism the Temple Mount is the holiest site, according to Hebrew scripture the world expanded into its present form from here, and it was this place where God took some soil and created the first man, Adam. The First Temple of the ancient religion of the biblical Israelitese was built by King Solomon (Reign: 971 - 931 BCE) on the Temple Mount, replacing the local sanctuaries, Solomon's temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. Also the Second Jewish Temple was built on the site, the reconstructed "Temple in Jerusalem". Jerusalem and its Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans on the 4th August 70 CE. For Muslims, the site is revered as the destination where the Prophet Muhammad travelled in his Night Journey (Bayt al-Muqaddas) and the location of his ascent to heaven. The Haram al Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) which is the location of the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, is considered to be the third holiest site in Islam. Also Jesus has prayed on the Temple Mount (Mark 11:25-26) here he has chased away the money changers and other merchants from the courtyard of the temple. The walls around Jerusalem's Old City were built between 1537 and 1541 CE by the Ottoman Empire under the direct supervision of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The walls stretch for approximately 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) and rise to a height of 5–15 meters (16–49 feet), with a thickness of 3 meters (10 feet). The Old City walls contain 43 surveillance towers and 11 gates, seven of which are presently open. |
