In Judaism the Temple Mount is the holiest site, according to Hebrew scripture the world expanded into its present form from here, and it was this place where God took some soil and created the first man, Adam. For Muslims, the site is revered as the destination where the Prophet Muhammad travelled in his Night Journey (Bayt al-Muqaddas) and the location of his ascent to heaven. The Haram al Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) which is the location of the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, is considered to be the third holiest site in Islam. Also Jesus has prayed on the Temple Mount (Mark 11:25-26) here he has chased away the money changers and other merchants from the courtyard of the temple. The walls around Jerusalem's Old City were built between 1537 and 1541 CE by the Ottoman Empire under the direct supervision of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The walls stretch for approximately 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) and rise to a height of 5–15 meters (16–49 feet), with a thickness of 3 meters (10 feet). The Old City walls contain 43 surveillance towers and 11 gates, seven of which are presently open. |
