Forbidden City (Chin. 紫禁城; zǐ jìn chéng, „Purple Forbidden City“ or Chin. 故宫, gù gōng „Emperor Palace, heavenly palace“). Today it is formally called Palace Museum.
Satellite view is showing the Forbidden City in Beijing China. The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the mid-Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty (see: Chinese Dynasties), located in what is today Beijing in the Dongcheng District. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the Emperor and his household. No commoner or foreigner was allowed to enter it without special permission. The complex consists of almost 1000 buildings on an area of 720,000 square metres, it is surrounded by a 8-metre high city wall and a six-metre deep, 52-metre wide moat. It is the largest cluster of well preserved ancient buildings in the world. Construction began in 1406 and took about 14 years.
