Being the best known Chinese historical figure, Guan U is seen as the epitome of loyalty and righteousness and traditionally portrayed as a red-faced warrior with a long lush beard. The idea of his red face could have been borrowed from opera representation. Guan U's weapon was a Guandao (a double-edged blade on the end of a pole like a Halberd) named ‘Green Dragon Crescent Blade’. He traditionally wears a green robe over his body armour, as depicted in the ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’.

Guan U was a general under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han Dynasty (25- 220 AD) and Three Kingdoms era (220- 280 AD) of China. He played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the Han Dynasty (206BC- 220 AD) and the establishment of the Kingdom of Shu (221- 263AD), of which Liu Bei was the first emperor.
